Event Details

Is bondage just about restraining someone, or is it about how we do it? How do we shape the gesture, the movement, the posture? Let’s simplify and exaggerate the most basic motions. Let’s focus on how we share space, how we move around each other, how we lead or follow, how we explore tempo and intention in the simplest of acts.

Are we not, in fact, talking about a dance?

Over the years, I have developed, studied, and shared exactly this approach. Though I am not a dancer, working with rope has made me dance—with my partners, with my own body, and within the flow of movement. I have, of course, drawn from my physical background: years of Aikido, elements of contact improvisation, and, more recently, Tango.

In this Wednesday tuition class, I want to share my understanding and guide you in experiencing my approach from the inside. But this is not a one-way lesson—I will observe you, we will exchange ideas, and together, we will slowly deepen our research. Hopefully, we will uncover and explore new areas of movement and connection.

Of course, having a shared group for ongoing study would be ideal—or at least a core group that can support each other’s growth and expand our possibilities. There will be plenty of opportunities to switch within pairs or between partners. My background is in martial arts, where we believe in working with all types of bodies and genders. We also encourage the ability to switch roles. However, this is a strong suggestion, not a requirement. Above all, respect yourself and your boundaries.

Skill Requirements:

  • Open to anyone with basic physical training and prior rope experience. This workshop is not for complete beginners, but you don’t need to be an expert—just familiar with rope and body awareness.
  • Both tops and bottoms should be comfortable working with body consciousness and communication.
  • Basic rope knowledge is expected (e.g., being able to tie or understand a single-column tie). Advanced skills are not required, but prior exposure to a beginner workshop or equivalent experience is recommended.

Material Requirements:

  • At least one kinbaku rope per person.
  • A blindfold or a versatile piece of fabric per person.
  • Rounded carabiners or a ring.
  • Comfortable clothing suitable for movement—ideally, something you can dance in.
  • Rules & Notes:
  • Limited to 16 participants. Tickets are non-refundable, but you may resell your spot.
  • Participants must be 18+ and medically able to engage in physical activities (e.g., yoga, martial arts, dance).
  • This is a physically demanding workshop; some preparation will help you fully enjoy the experience.
  • No photo, video, or audio recordings are allowed. Be fully present in the moment.
